Saint Dominic Medal at StDominic.webhero.com

Many people search for and wear patron saint medals as signs of their faith and as a way to center their lives around their saint and his or her deeds and life. Patron saint medals are often believed to afford protection by the patron saint and be a way to request intercession by that saint in their lives.

The Dominican Order

St. Dominic, well known as the patron saint of astronomers and astronomy, as well as falsely accused persons, is a popular saint. He is also the founder of the Order of Preachers, more commonly known as the Dominicans.Because of his close association with astronomy, many St. Dominic Medals include a star. His mother reported seeing a star shining from his chest on the day of his baptism, and this may be part of the reason he became the patron saint of astronomers and scientists. In many patron saint charms he is pictured over a book, for he was always a man of learning.

The Dominican Order chose the colors of black and white to represent the balance between penance and purity, but those colors also represent the black night sky with the white sparks of stars. The stars and the study of astronomy also remind us of the holy star that lit the way in Bethlehem for the three wise men who discovered the birth of Jesus. Much of the St. Dominic jewelry available includes the colors black and white for those reasons.

ScBorromeo.org - Patron Saints

The word "saint" comes from the Latin word sanctus, which translates to "consecrated" or "holy." Saints are men and women who have lived their lives (and very often gave them up freely) in such a way as to be rewarded with the Kingdom of God. The road to being officially recognized by the Church as a saint in a long one. In the earliest stage, the saint-in-the-making is identified as a "Servant of God."

ScBorromeo.org - Patron Saints

That stage is followed by a recognition of being "Venerable" and then "Blessed" before being recognized by the Church as a saint or "Friend of God." This official recognition by the Church as a saint comes at the conclusion of the process and ceremony called "canonization."

These saints, living exemplary lives, provide for us examples to follow so that we may, in turn, follow them to Heaven. "Feast Days" are recognized for each saint. These feast days are very often the day of the year in which they died, especially if they gave up their lives for their faith. These special saints that gave up their lives for their faith are called "martyrs."

Saint Medallions - Best Gift for Christmas

Patron saint medallions come in a variety of materials, such as silver and titanium, but gold has been a long standing tradition in crafting this type of jewelry. Metal content in the jewelry pieces can vary, as well as the color of the gold.

Sometimes it is possible to find a pure gold medallion to wear, but more common 10k, 14k, or 18k pieces are offered for consumers to buy. Gold patron saint medals are most commonly worn as a necklace but it is possible to find bracelets and earrings as well.

Saint Medallions - Best Gift for Christmas

The patron saint often featured on a piece of jewelry can vary but all have their ties to Christianity and a story. Catholics believe that a patron saint is a protector and a negotiator before God, and often wear this symbol of their religion alone or paired with other religious jewelry. Saints such as St. Luke, St. Christopher, Fatima, St. Theresa, or the Virgin Mary are commonly found.

Others saints can be harder to find, but similar in construction. Most saint medallions feature the saint standing alone or in some religious act, or with a child. Some pieces of jewelry feature scenes on both sides of the medallion, while others are simple and a one sided display of symbolism.

CatholicChild.Com - Patron Saints Medals Children

Patron saints are chosen as special protectors or guardians over areas of life such as occupations, illnesses, churches, countries, causes -- anything that is important to us. They are often chosen because an interest, talent, or event in their lives overlaps with an interest. For example, Francis of Assisi loved nature and so he is patron of ecologists. Clare of Assisi was named patron of television because one Christmas when she was too ill to leave her bed she saw and heard Christmas Mass -- even though it was taking place miles away!

Silver Patron Saint Medals

A patron saint can help us when we follow the example of that saint's life and when we ask for that saint's intercessory prayers to God. This is one reason why it is common practice for Confirmation candidates to choose a patron saint that they feel an affinity toward or are inspired by as they prepare to receive the grace-filled sacrament.

Miraculous Medals - A Brief Overview

The Immaculate Conception forms the basis of the Catholic religion as it is known today. Therefore, it is natural that a medal would exist which commemorates the miraculous conception and symbolism of the birth of Jesus Christ. The miraculous medals were created by Saint Catherine Laboure, a nun who belonged to the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, after she had a vision of the Virgin Mary. Catholics believe that the medallions confer blessings and intercessions from Mary as long as they are worn with faith and devotion. Millions of people, both Catholic and non-Catholics alike, wear these medals today.

Silver Miraculous Medals

St. Catherine Laboure was the second to last child out of 11 children. Her mother passed away at a young age and she was taken in by her aunts. It is believed that Saint Catherine was a psychic. There are reports of her foretelling some events correctly but missing others.  She became a nursing sister after she had a dream about Saint Vincent de Paul. The idea for the miraculous medals was given to her during a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In fact, she had two visions total of Mary, both of which pertained to the development of the medallions.

The Patron Saint of Nurses

What imagines come to mind when people think of nurses? It is possible that the images that come to mind involve the color white, illness, doctor, health, and shot. Moreover, the color white is usually associated with goodness, purity, and virginity. This view of the color white seems to make perfect sense because nurses often care for babies. Moreover, it could be the case that nurses are seen as saints because they do heal the sick. Therefore, it should come as no surprise to anyone that there is a patron saint of nurses. In addition, the patron saint of nurses is a woman. Let’s discuss nurses.

The

Nurses are healthcare professionals who, with the help of doctors and other members of a healthcare team are responsible for the treatment, safety, and recovery of acutely or chronically ill patients. Nurses perform a wide range of both clinical and non-clinical functions necessary to the delivery of health. Nurses may also be involved in both medical and nursing research. It might be interesting to note that the crème de la crème of nurses was Florence Nightingale. She is credited with defining both nursing roles and nursing education. Did you know that around the world, nurses have been traditionally female? Yes, this is the case despite the fact that there is equal opportunity legislation; nursing has continued to be a female-dominated profession. It might also be interesting to know that nowadays a nursing shortage in The United Kingdom. The United States, Canada, and other developed countries. Another interesting tidbit about nursing involves the word origin of nurse. The English word nurse also refers to the act of breastfeeding. Did you know that a wet nurse is considered someone who provides her own breast milk to infants? In other languages, the word for nurse comes from the same origin as the word infirmary. This makes complete sense because many nurses work in infirmaries. In addition, given all the above information about nurses, it should come as no surprise that the patron saint of nurses is a woman. Let’s discuss the patron saint of nurses.

Gold Patron Saint Medals

Gold patron saint medals are a traditional piece for Catholics and other Christians to wear, a trend dating back several hundred years. Since the time where humans figured out how to craft gold and other metals into fashionable jewelry pieces and even before that when other materials were utilized in jewelry making, religious icons and jewelry have been together as a normal display of religious affiliation and protection. Some wearers may choose to only wear their patron saint medallion jewelry on a special or religious occasion, while others wear the medal on a daily basis as a sign of affiliation and protection from harm.

Saint Francis Medal

Patron saint medallions come in a variety of materials, such as silver and titanium, but gold has been a long standing tradition in crafting this type of jewelry. Metal content in the jewelry pieces can vary, as well as the color of the gold. Sometimes it is possible to find a pure gold medallion to wear, but more common 10k, 14k, or 18k pieces are offered for consumers to buy. Gold patron saint medals are most commonly worn as a necklace but it is possible to find bracelets and earrings as well.

Patron Saint Locket

The elaboration of detail can depend on the jeweler who crafted the piece, but most gold patron saint medallions are made of yellow gold. More elaborate offerings can feature extreme detail or a mixture of colors of gold or gold mixed with another material to make features of the jewelry stand out. Prices on a piece of gold patron saint medallion jewelry can range widely, depending on the maker, what it is constructed of, and which saint is pictured on it. Prices on a gold patron saint medal range from very cheap to several hundred or more.
